She still had mixed feelings when she pulled into the VFW parking lot Thursday night. Stockton was waiting for her at the door of the cement block building to sign her in with guest privileges.
“Wondered whether you’d come,” he greeted her.
“Doesn’t hurt to listen.”
“Ahh, but the invitation into the inner sanctum.” He opened the door for her and she went down the hallway into the bar. “Ever been here before?” Kendra shook her head. “Back office. Through that door, down the hall. Last on the left.”
Kendra ignored the speculative glances as she walked through the bar, nodding at those who greeted her. No one seemed surprised to see her and that made her even more curious. She found the office and knocked at the closed door.
Small office, three desks. Not exactly spit and polish but serviceable. Harris was there, she’d expected that. Johnny and Clyde were there. Johnny was always the hanger-on but Clyde was somewhat of a surprise.
Harris came around the desk to greet her, pulled out a chair for her. “Glad you could make it, Mac.”
Kendra nodded as she took the seat. While she’d had good dealings with Harris, Johnny was a follower without much brains and Clyde carried a chip on his shoulder.
“You said you had a project I might be interested in.”
“Got a security issue at the campground.”
“A security issue.” She almost laughed. “At the campground? What’s there to be secure there?” She looked at all three of them but interesting ideas began to form in the back of her mind.
“Well, there’s supplies, foodstuffs and all,” Johnny began. “And then there’s the guns.”
Clyde cut him off. “You know we have guns and ammunition stored there for the shooting range.”
Kendra turned to him. Not for the first time, it occurred to her that it would be a great cover. “So? I thought they’d be locked up and secure.”
“Well, since Artie isn’t there, and Sue is working away from the house, the place is empty sometimes. And you know those cabins, tucked in the trees here and there. Wouldn’t be hard for someone to slip in there and do a little pilfering.”
“No, I suppose not,” Kendra said slowly although she privately thought the only ones in the area who would be pilfering were already members.
“And then that reporter on the tube,” Johnny started but got cut off again.
“That Slusher woman, that reporter on WMIU,” Clyde cut in again. “She had that story the other night about the group in Montana. Got busted for stockpiling weapons. Sorta made everyone sit up and take notice, look at us like we got an arsenal hidden away.”
Kendra nodded. She had seen Robin’s report. Even though she didn’t always watch her nightly reports, she had caught that one. “Yeah, I can see why it would make folks nervous.”
“We don’t want to be a target for some break-ins just because someone gets the crazy idea we’ve got stuff hidden.”
“You could just tell them,” Kendra offered.
“Pshaw! You know they’re not going to believe us if they already have a preconceived idea.
